Silent Thoughts
I stand alone for all to see From far and wide and visit me You gaze upon my polished face As I stand proud upon this base
I see you come I watch you go My silent thoughts you cannot know You cannot know the things we’ve seen When long ago this was silksheen
A different crowd of people then The airfield staff and brave young men Like you they came onto this base But then this was a different place
A place were many lives were lost Like most this field has paid the cost So when you come to look around Remember this once was solemn ground……..
The tower stands still looks upon The runways which have long since gone No more it sees the bombers pass Just tangled weed and wind blown grass
So much has changed, but not at all To some of you who still recall And those who walk about unseen This place is all there’s ever been
As I look down I still can see A phantom face look up at me Amongst the crowd and late at night As he prepares for one last flight
So when you leave to go back home Remember things this place has shown And as it was before you came This place to us will stay the same
