Inaugural BAR TO BAR Rally 6th September 09

Chris and I had a house full at the weekend with friends who had come to join us in taking part in this new inaugural rally.

Chris and Keith Haigh from Barnsley, Sue and Dave Cook from the North East, Lou and Charlie Edwards from Derby and last but certainly not least Brian Newham.

We were initially approached about taking part in this event about three/four months ago, and as everyone knows there are just not enough weekends in the MM summer calendar to fit in all the events that one would like to go to! So after much discussion the 6th of September was decided on. It was then a case of planning and putting out feelers to see who would like to take part. We had a lot of emails and phone calls going back and forth with the odd meeting thrown in with the PR firm run by Mike and Louise who have taken on the job of promoting The Bay at Filey. Although we had had a lot of interest shown it was a case of ‘suck it and see’ on the day. We needn’t have worried however as we had a really great turn out.

The meeting place for the start of the run was in the Saturday Market Place in Beverley, it was an early start though as cars needed to be there between 9 to 9.30am. Lawrence and Wayne (the owners) of The Bay Filey were already on hand with Mike and Louise to meet us when we arrived. Beverley’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Elizabeth Foot and her ‘consort’ were there to look round the cars and give us the official wave off through the North Bar Without. We had a selection of classics but as the stars of the show ofcourse the Morris Minors led the way!!

The Police had closed Beverley centre for us and stopped all the traffic lights so that we could all pass through the Bar in a long convoy on our way to the ‘new’ Bar at The Bay. It must have been a stunning sight, as even looking back through the wing mirrors of the Pick Up it looked amazing. I haven’t seen the official photo shoot yet but it is going to be in all the news so I think it will be hard to miss. Although we have been promised all the relevant material, so when I get them they will posted on the website.

We made our way out of Beverley through Molescroft and Leconfield to join up with the main Bridlington road then on with the 25 mile trip to The Bay, again the traffic was stopped and we where officially waved in. We travelled up the long sweeping Parade and round the part of the site that is completed to park up in formation in front of the new North Bar Without. This really is the most amazing full sized replica of the original one at Beverley- even down to the chimney that no one seems to spot!

Once we were all in place we moved into the John Paul Jones Inn for a complementary full (and I mean full) hot buffet English style Breakfast that had been laid on for us. I must say at this point we were all impressed to say the least!!! Once full of bacon, sausage, black pudding, fried bread eggs, mushrooms etc we made our way back outside for more official photos. We were given a tour of the Lodges which are beautiful, some are available to either buy or hire for a holiday. There are plans for a huge leisure complex which will have tennis courts, swimming pool, Gymnasium and full sized bowling greens. Also faze two of the Lodges is soon to be underway.

Some of us walked down to the beach to look at the really stunning views, others sat and relaxed in the sunshine outside the Inn. I was sorry that I had eaten so much at breakfast as the Sunday Lunches looked very appetizing!

We started to make our way home about 3.30pm with a detour to Lebberston for coffee and cakes at Tom and Jill Dixon’s lovely house and garden which incidentally also has some stunning views over the countryside.

Chris being in Bertha the Morris Commercial MRA1 we decided that the convoy would take the Bridlington road back to Wansford as it was a lot less bumpy for both him and the ‘old girl’.

We all had a really fantastic day out, and are now planning for the same event next year.
